Brais, Malouin & Associates (BMA) was founded in March 1991 in Montreal, Canada. We are an energy engineering consulting firm specialized in combustion and numerical simulation (CFD). Over the years, we have completed projects in many energy intensive industries including the pulp & paper, mining & metallurgical, and petrochemical industries. BMA has been a pioneer in many engineering R&D projects and product development.
The company now employs over 20 engineers, technicians and various specialists, and is headquartered in Ville Saint-Laurent, a borough of the city of Montreal, Canada.
BMA’s mission is to combine our knowledge and expertise in energy engineering, combustion, and numerical simulation in order to develop innovative and economical solutions for our clients that will also be beneficial to the environment.
Normand Brais, Eng., M.Sc.A., Ph.D., President
Having graduated from Polytechnique Montréal, Dr. Brais holds a Master’s degree in mechanical engineering and a Doctorate in nuclear engineering, specialized in Combustion/Numerical Simulation (CFD).
Dr. Brais’ professional career began at an industrial burner manufacturer where he held the positions of start up engineer, product designer, and R&D director. While doing so, he was a lecturer in combustion at Polytechnique Montréal. Nominated as an associate professor at the Institut de Génie Énergétique in 1991, he later stepped down to devote more time to his consulting firm, Brais, Malouin and Associates (BMA).
The application of numerical simulation to industrial burner design led Dr. Brais to co-found a new company manufacturing very low NOx industrial burners. Following the acquisition of this firm by a U.S. conglomerate, Dr. Brais became Vice President, R&D and member of the board of directors of the group. Since 2007, he has resumed his role as a consultant in combustion and energy engineering and President of BMA.
Louis-Michel Malouin, Eng., M.Eng., Vice-President
Having graduated in mechanical engineering from McGill University, Mr. Malouin also holds a Master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Polytechnique Montréal, with a specialty in combustion.
His professional career began at Brais Malouin and Associates (BMA) where he developed expertise in the fields of oil, natural gas, and biomass combustion. His experience covers a large field of services ranging from burner design to startups on site. He has been called on to travel extensively, offering combustion consultation services to clients around the world. After 5 years as BMA’s President, he then founded a new company specialized in renewable energy: BMATech, while remaining active as BMA’s Vice-President. In collaboration with another Quebec company and a European partner, BMATech will offer a range of Canadian made products, including biomass combustion units. Mr. Malouin has been President of BMATech since its founding in 2008.
Guy de Carufel, Eng., M.Eng., Director of Operations
Having graduated in mechanical engineering from Polytechnique Montréal, Mr. de Carufel also holds a Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, specialized in energy, from Polytechnique Montréal.
After beginning his career at the Atomic Energy Control Board as a reactor safety specialist, he occupied several positions in the telecommunications field, ranging from programmer-analyst to product manager. He joined Brais Malouin and Associates (BMA) in 2004 and became a business partner in 2007. He currently acts as the Director of Operations.
